 Hello, bruins

We began this week's class material with a compelling guest speaker who, I believe, set the tone for the remainder of the week. This week's topic is space and art, which I would never have combined in a real-world application. The guest speaker who began this week laid a solid framework for how these two cultures interact. I found her work to be incredibly interesting and necessary; it puts into perspective Vesna's statement that we must take care of our planet as we begin exploring biomes outside of planet Earth. Much of the guest speaker's work is devoted to recreating biomes that would be used if the earth ceased to be a habitual location for humans to exist. This made me think about how much effort is put into ensuring that the human population has other options for living, while the guest speaker researched which animals may exist in these man-created biomes.

Watching the clip power of ten minimizes the dimensions of humanity on Earth in comparison to our relative size in the universe. This clip was mind-blowing since we as humans on Earth are so minuscule in comparison to everything else that we are only a pixel in this galaxy of galaxies. I found it fascinating how the video went from the outside of our globe to the inside of our bodies, revealing the cell and biological functions that occur inside our bodies. There are processes both inside and outside of our bodies. Enter a region of our body made up of neutrons and protons. Every molecule in the universe is made up of atoms that are bound together.

Vesna began her introduction video by describing the planets and recalling how each one has a name associated with mythology. When we look at space and planets, we wonder about life and how vast the cosmos is. I felt her use of mythology was particularly interesting while discussing the universe, as there are numerous references to Greek gods. According to Vesna, Jupiter was the monarch of the Gods, and Venus was the goddess of beauty, all of which were given planet names. This fascinates me since I have an app called Sky Guide that not only provides you a map of the stars and space, but it also tells you the reason behind the names.

  1. Hi Yuliana! Your blog post caught my eye because of the great pictures you selected. Well done! I came into this weeks lecture with the same mindset, I wasn't sure how space and art were interconnected. Luckily, Professor Vesna as well as the guest speaker solidified that this pairing is extremely relevant and beneficial to both fields. Recreating biomes was a fascinating and informative topic for me as well, so it was nice to read about it in your blog post!
