Yuliana Garcia (desma-9) week 4

 Hello Fellow Bloggers,

This week's lectures exposed us to how biotechnology has manifested itself in art and created a modern platform for discovery. The dissection of the body as a medium of art has encouraged artists to explain the body form in detail, according to Vesna Part 1 lecture. I thought it was a fascinating take when she brought in artist Orlan, who has used plastic surgery as a medium of art, influenced by artists such as Leonardo da Vinci. Vesna states that the artist Orlan is put in a medical professional setting as physicians conduct plastic surgery on her and that she is influenced by artist body physiques. Almost everything that struck me was the artist Orlan's use of past images of the Mona Lisa or popular paintings to create parts of her body, such as her face and lips. The technique of plastic surgery is then used to offer the body shape that has been modeled by sculpture.

I first became acquainted with the medical professional scene through mass culture and television. I remember seeing Grey's Anatomy and realizing that the way they portrayed the medical scene was dramatic, and I felt like I was a part of the adrenaline that fills up the ER when patients come in with immediate medical emergencies. Then learning that some series, such as Nip and Tuck, is focused on accurate medical knowledge is an intriguing idea. That when the public is viewing the shows for entertainment, they are also participating in critical medical procedures that take place in daily life.

Another intriguing viewpoint was Diane Gromala's Ted Talk, in which she advanced medical science into a kind of contemporary art. It was exciting to see how she turned her debilitating suffering into a learning experience by studying pain-relieving technologies. She shared a very interesting invention of hers called VR- Feedback, in which she mixes technology and meditation. Modern technology provides updates in real-time on whether meditation is beneficial to the person and what inner senses are being activated. Over time, we have shown how medical science research will bring support to many people who are fighting silent enemies such as chronic pain.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your blog! Specifically, your mention of plastic surgery was fascinating. It is interesting how that type of medical technology redefines art as we know it. Different people appreciate it in their own ways and some don't appreciate it at all. I liked how you compared the model to a sculpture because it enabled me to visualize how this type of medtech translate to art.

  2. Thank you for your blog! I agree the part where you talked about plastic surgery as an art was very interesting to me too. Growing up I had a really close friend who was an artist but planned on pursuing plastic surgery because she saw it as a kind of sculpting. It is crazy to think about in this context but people spend hundreds of thousands of dollars transforming their body and the outcome is really the product of the surgeons artistic ability to shape features to look a certain way. It really is art more than anything! (PS I also love Grey's Anatomy and Nip and Tuck!)
