Yuliana Garcia -desma 9 week 7 blog post

 Hello bruins

In her introduction to this week's lecture, Vesna brought up the topic of our consciousness and how culture influences it. This statement got me thinking, particularly when she mentioned us being machined’ slaves. This reminded me of a reading I had in one of my political classes on Henry David Thoreau, in which he warns society against joining this "information community," as Vesna describes, in which the ordinary citizen becomes dominated and enslaved to the computers we use in our everyday lives. Thoreau believed that society was becoming increasingly submissive to the same society that limits and restricts their rights, and that individualism "man becomes a machine" merely a result of social needs, further away from living intentionally. This refers to our consciousness as defined in the lecture, as well as our understanding of what life is and what our own beliefs are.

In reference to Aristotle and his idea of consciousness, he believed that all true thought took place in the heart. However, through study and the invention of the microscope, they were able to structure the location of the brain. It's fascinating to see the mapping of the brain; for quite some time, humanity didn't know the allocations of the body, but now we can conduct scans on the brain and even surgery. We continue to evolve the brain in many ways over time and space, from simply discovering its place to deeply studying it with the field of neuroscience.

We also spoke about dreams and how many of the dreams we have, we seem to forget about. We discussed Freud's and Young's views on religion, and how they differed. Religion was restricting to Freud, but it provided individuality to Young. Young addresses collective consciousness, which he refers to as archetypical, and how it gives us individuals the ability to produce an image.
